Nestled into a hidden ridge in the shadow of the sacred Nanda Devi range, The Kumaon offers a private mountain retreat situated in the heart of nature.
Descend through forests of Pine, Oak, Cedar and Rhododendron to ancient temples or relax in the mountain sunshine looking across verdant terraces surrounded by birdsong and the fragrant smell of forests.
The ridge has attracted spiritual leaders and seekers for centuries: Bob Dylan, Lama AngarikaGovinda, Ram Daas, Robert Thurman, J. R. Tolkein, Uday Shankar and Timothy Leary.
The Kumaon is designed by the award-winning Sri Lankan architect Pradeep Kodikara, a disciple of Geoffrey Bawa who has extended tropical modernism into a unique mountain design.
Rotating walls of glass maximize the view onto the forest, terraces and mountain peaks and combined with local masonry provide coolness in the heat and warmth in the cold.
Each room features its own bukhari for evening and winter warmth and there are open fire places in the library and lounge.
The Kumaon offers 10 luxury suites and rooms, a library, sun lounge and gourmet restaurant. All buildings are constructed and situated with a particular sensitivity to their natural environment.
Local Kumaoni cuisine- earthy, rustic and divine- it features a hemp chutney, the local Gehat ki Daal and Chaulaai Ka Saag and Crisp Maduwe Rotis to polish if all off with.
